The New Printing Presses of the Renaissance
From the medieval scriptorium to Kubernetes: humanity has always built machines to replicate ideas faster. Only the tools change.

There was a time when reproducing a book was an almost sacred act.
Not because ideas were divine, but because they were scarce.
Copying knowledge meant locking men away for months in damp monasteries, hunched over parchments made from animal skin, lit by candles that consumed their eyesight faster than the wax itself. Every word had to be traced by hand, and a single mistake could destroy entire weeks of work. A book was not merely an object: it was a relic, a privilege reserved for structures able to afford the time, the materials, and people dedicated solely to preserving texts.
The man who printed too fast
And then a man appeared.
Or perhaps a myth.
As a child I read The Tragic Life of Doctor Johann Faust, but it was not Faust who ended up marking me deeply. It was the prologue. There it told the story of a German accused of having a pact with the devil because he did something impossible for his era: producing Bibles too fast.
While the monks took months to copy a single one, this man seemed to conjure books out of nothing. Identical. Perfect. Repeatable. The same quality in every copy, as if he had discovered a supernatural way to multiply objects.
The friars then did what every structure does when it fails to understand a new technology: they declared it demonic.
There were smear campaigns, rumors, and fear. Not of the devil, really, but of replacement. Because it threatened an entire order. Knowledge would no longer depend on the slow hands of a specialized elite.
And when they finally broke into his workshop, they found incomprehensible machines. Movable metals. Molds. Presses. Mechanisms impossible for a mind accustomed only to parchment and manual ink. That, far from calming them, confirmed their suspicions: no human being could produce knowledge so fast without infernal help.
But the most interesting thing in the prologue was another idea.
That perhaps it was not even a European invention.
Centuries before Gutenberg, China already possessed primitive forms of printing. Some historians even consider it possible that Europe did not truly invent the idea, but simply industrialized it.
And that difference changes the story completely.
Because humanity rarely remembers the first to imagine something. It remembers the first to manage to scale it.

The printing press and the birth of modern replication
The printing press did not only print books. It printed revolutions.
Before it, knowledge was profoundly vertical. The Church spoke and the people listened. Ideas traveled slowly because copying information was costly, slow, and dangerous. Power depended precisely on controlling who could replicate knowledge and who could not.
But a press alters the very nature of truth.
When you can copy an idea a thousand times, it stops belonging to an elite. When you can replicate it exactly, knowledge stops deforming between generations. And when anyone can access it, power inevitably changes hands.
The printing press was to knowledge what the internet would become centuries later: a machine for breaking monopolies over information.
And honestly, we are still trapped inside the same discussion five hundred years later. Only the machines changed.
The self-hosted server and the medieval monasteries
Today many developers talk about servers, cloud, Kubernetes, or infrastructure as if they were concepts reserved exclusively for engineers, but in reality we are still talking about printing presses. Modern technology is not so different from the Renaissance; we simply refined the tools to replicate ideas.
Having your own server closely resembles the old medieval world. You want to publish something and you need to build the entire infrastructure yourself: buy hardware, keep it alive, administer it, and repair it when it fails. Exactly like those monasteries that needed ink, parchment, copyists, and years of patience to produce a book.
Everything depends on you.
And a single mistake can ruin it all.
The cloud and the rented printing presses
The cloud changed that the same way movable type transformed Europe. The cloud, which in simple terms is infrastructure rented over the internet, allowed people to stop needing an entire printing press to produce something important. You no longer need to own all the machines; you only need access to them.
You can test ideas fast, tear systems down and bring them back up in minutes, experiment without committing entire months of work. That is really what the cloud is: the industrialization of infrastructure.
And then another inevitable question appears:
Who built these gigantic new printing presses?
AWS, Amazon Web Services —the largest infrastructure platform in the world— has always struck me as a deeply Renaissance story. I imagine enormous printing workshops originally financed to produce royal libraries: monstrous presses, infinite resources, and colossal capacity. But the machines spent too much time idle between official projects.
Then someone had a brilliant idea:
“What if we rent the presses by the hour?”
That is AWS.
Surplus infrastructure turned into a service.
The genius was not only technological; it was economic. It democratized something that previously only entire empires could afford. You no longer need to build a monumental printing press to publish an idea. You take exactly the capacity you need and abandon it when you finish, letting someone else immediately occupy the same space.
But there is an important difference between renting a printing press and owning one.
The cloud gives you speed, elasticity, and immediate access, but it never quite ends up belonging to you. If you stop paying, the machines vanish with you. Your systems stop advancing, your services halt, and the entire workshop ceases to exist because it was never really yours.
By contrast, when the infrastructure is your own, even if old or imperfect, you can still keep it running under your own rules. You can shut down part of it, cut costs, improvise solutions, and survive with far less movement. You do not depend entirely on someone else allowing you to keep printing.
And that difference completely changes your relationship with technology.
Because renting infrastructure buys immediate freedom, but it also creates permanent dependence.
Kubernetes and the master printer
And then we arrive at Kubernetes.
Kubernetes, a system that organizes applications and servers automatically, works like the old master printer of the Renaissance: it does not write the content nor manufacture the paper, but it coordinates every press so that none collapses and every copy comes out identical.
You hand over the work already prepared. Containers —packages that hold a complete application ready to run— are the equivalent of the metal plates with the text already assembled. Kubernetes simply organizes the chaos.
It decides which machines work, which rest, and which must be replaced if one fails. It controls the flow to avoid bottlenecks and guarantees that the final result is always the same no matter where it is produced.
But there is something even more important.
It controls the environments.
Because you do not print a draft the same way you print an edition destined for the king.
There is the cheap paper where apprentices correct mistakes. There is the copy the editor reviews. And finally there is the edition with golden letters destined to become the official version.
Those are the modern environments.
Development, or Dev, the space where developers experiment and break things constantly. Staging, the intermediate environment where everything is validated before being published. And Production, the real system used by real users.
Most people believe environments exist for convenience.
No.
They exist because even ideas need safe places to be wrong before exposing themselves to the world.
The machines never really changed
Perhaps that is why truly revolutionary technologies always seem like magic at their birth. Not because they are, but because every civilization takes time to develop the language needed to understand what transforms its era.
The monks saw demons in a printing press.
Today many still see smoke and abstraction in the cloud, in Kubernetes, or in the internet.
But behind all of it there still exists exactly the same human obsession:
Replicating ideas faster than before.
The printing press freed knowledge from the monasteries. The internet freed software from physical servers. The cloud freed infrastructure from private data centers.
But every new freedom brings new dependencies with it.
And still we keep advancing.
Because in the end humanity always ends up doing exactly the same thing:
Building machines to reproduce ideas, preserve them, and distribute them farther than a single human life could ever manage on its own.
